I’ve talked about how my kid is my personal energy vampire, she drains my lifeforce faster than anything else. But she’s also the battery that recharged my aging bones.
Mags would bounce in a bounce house until she fell asleep. While bouncing. She’d call for me to jump with her and we’d bounce and laugh in ways I’d never been able to connect with another human being.
We joked that we should buy her a pink bunny costume and a bass drum.
When she learned to bounce a basketball she would cry that her hands hurt, yet she wouldn’t stop. These things that should have been glaring alerts, we tried to get anyone to listen.
The breakdowns were the worst. When Reed was her age, we’d say, they told us that kids flip out with their parents because they feel safe. She must have felt very safe with us.
Everyone was “screaming” at her when they asked her to do something after 3 pm. Everyone “hated” her if she left her socks on the living room floor. We “never” loved her if we said no to doing something she wanted to do.
